Historically, the majority of our Puppy Parents express desire for a female from our litter. Through witnessing this tendency, I have come to a better understanding of the differences between the two genders. There are some differences between male and female havanese, especially when not spayed/neutered. Here, I briefly explain the main general characteristics for each gender with the pros and cons for both males and females.
Females: “Loving Miss Independent...”Females love their families, and being a havanese that were bred solely for companion reasons, will love being on your lap. She will appreciate your affections and attention. She will get used to being spoiled. Females can however be a little more aloof and independent. A female may at times be a little more stubborn about learning commands. It is also commonly known that females are way more likely to urinate on the floor when excited to see their family members and new people. Spay your female to avoid moodiness and bleeding from heat cycles.
Males: “Ol’ Faithful”Males tend to be more loyal and committed to their family. Males give lots of love and want to receive lots of affection and will welcomes themselves on your lap. A male is more likely to follow you everywhere even when that may not be desired by his owner. Males are more likely to be “needy”, so be ready for the possibility of man‘s best friend always being by your side, with the owner forgetting he is there and tripping over him, or worse, injuring him. About the bad rap for males: the “dreadful dog behaviors” widely associated with males, such as fighting with other dogs, lifting his leg to mark everything for territory, humping, aggression, etc are characteristic only in unneutered males. Neutering your beloved family pet will eliminate his biological need by nature to find a female in heat, thereby making him focused on being a best suited member of his family.
Both males and females do exceptionally well as house pets after being spayed/neutered, there being no large difference between the two sexes. The differences betbecome nearly non-existent Don’t exclude the possibility of a male for your new family member, as they make as wonderful a family member as do the girls..
